Port Glasgow Medical Centre is a Deep End practice, serving an area of significant socioeconomic deprivation. Over 80% of our patients are in the 2 most socioeconomically deprived SIMD quintiles. This brings challenges, but many rewards. With the support of our team, including a community links worker, you will be able to see and feel the impact of health inequalities on a daily basis and make a big impact on the lives of our patients.

We are situated in the heart of Port Glasgow, a town with a population of around 14000 on the outskirts of Glasgow at the west end of the M8 corridor. It is an area of regeneration with a rich historical past. We are surrounded by spectacular scenery with beautiful views of Ben Lomond and beyond.

Everyone in the team contributes to the training and educational ethos in the practice. Dr Jen Dooley has been an educational supervisor/trainer in the practice since 1998 having come to the practice as a trainee in 1996, and Dr Stephen Page has been an educational supervisor since 2022, having trained locally in another Inverclyde practice in 2018. The practice has been a training practice since 1988, and many trainees have stayed on after their training as partners, salaried GPs, or locum GPs. Dr Lauren Copeland is the educational supervisor for our FY2s, and was a trainee with us until 2022. Dr Morven Macphie has taken an active role in training since she completed her own training with us in 2014.

There is a wealth of training opportunities in Port Glasgow Medical Centre. We run a substance misuse clinic in conjunction with our colleagues from the alcohol and drugs team, and in terms of practical procedures there is the opportunity to do steroid joint injections and nexplanon insertion/removal. Quality improvement is at the heart of what we do with weekly meetings to discuss our current projects.
